About This Site...

Content              Implementation

Stationary Steam Engine 1987Since it will be a while before all of the features of this web site have been implemented, we thought you might want to know where we're headed in terms of content and features.
We provide an outline below of some of the current and anticipated content of each of the major sections in the menu at your left.
Note that the information provided below is subject to change.

Home
Our home page consists entirely of a "What´s new..." section that lists the most recent additions or changes to the web site.

Search this site
Given that this site has thousands of pages and photographs, this R&T site-only search engine is a great way to find only those pages with equipment or people of interest to you. Be sure to check out the "Search Tips" on this feature.

About this site
That's what you're looking at right now.

About R&T
This multi-page section gives a more detailed description and overview of Rough and Tumble, including some of the material found in the Rough and Tumble Museum brochure. We have Marie Bongiavonni's "History of Rough and Tumble Engineers Historical Association, Inc. 1948-1988", which describes how the organization was founded. This section also describes how to become a member of Rough and Tumble and the benefits of membership as well as a membership application form. We have a description of the organization´s quarterly newsletter, The Whistle, a subscription to which is one of the benefits of membership. (At a future date, we may post reprints of some of the early editions of The Whistle.)

Photo Albums
A Rough and Tumble event is a very visual experience, though no photograph can compare to actually being there for the sounds and smells that accompany steam, kerosene and gasoline engines. We have a Photo Albums of regular annual events and a special Photo Album of one-time activities.

Visitors Info
This section provides all of the various kinds of information that may be of use to folks visiting Rough and Tumble in Kinzer, PA. We have maps of the area, directions from various areas, lists of motel information, links to the Chamber of Commerce and other sources of area information, hours of operation, a schedule of events, diagrams of the Rough and Tumble grounds, information on parking, food concessions and the gift shop.

Threshermen's Reunion
This section provides up-to-date information on the next reunion including dates, times, featured equipment and the daily program.

Divisions
This will be a major section of the web site and will take the longest to develop content for all of its subsections. The intent here is to provide both descriptive text and many photographs highlighting each of the "divisions" of Rough and Tumble, each "Division" focusing on a particular type of technology or equipment. For example, the "Tractors" section will itself be broken down by Steam Traction and Internal Combustion Tractors. Stationary Engines will be broken down by the Steam Museum, Large Internal Combustion and Small Internal Combustion stationary engines. Auxiliary Equipment will cover the Saw Mill, Threshing, and the many smaller pieces of equipment (shingle making, etc.) that are such a big part of Rough and Tumble. Similarly, we'll cover the Shay and Little Toot railroads, Model Engineering, and the Antique Autos and Antique Trucks featured at Rough and Tumble.

Organization
This section lists the Board of Directors, Officers and Committees of Rough and Tumble and the names of the members elected to fill those positions.

Volunteer Corner
Volunteering at Rough and Tumble is a great way to really be involved with the fascinating equipment associated with R&T and the wonderful events that entertain and inform the general public about that equipment and the early days in our country. This section provides information about the various types of volunteers whose services are needed, including the functions needed, and typical dates and times that specific volunteer services are needed.

What is it?
This section seeks identification or information about equipment for which photos are provided.
Swap Center
This section will be the place to go to find out what items are for sale by R&T, through its Gift Shop, as well as what is for sale by members of the organization and specific pieces of equipment or components or services that some members are looking to purchase. We will not take Gift Shop orders on the web, but we will provide for downloading and printing an order sheet that can then be completed and mailed to the Gift Shop in order to purchase "standard" items sold in the shop.

Contacting Us
This section will provide the information needed to contact the organization via telephone, fax, US Mail and eMail.

Subscribing to our Notification List
It's frustrating to visit a web site, especially a large one, and not know what's new since the last time you visited. In addition to the "What's new..." panel on the Home page, we have an email "notification service" whereby those who subscribe to the list have an email sent to them whenever the site has been updated. The email briefly describes the nature of the update, and the subscribers can then decide whether or not they want to check out the updated material. This is a proven and very convenient way to be kept up to date on what's happening with the site without having to go to it with your web browser only to find out nothing has changed or you're really not interested in the new information.

Implementation and Other Stuff...

This web site, like almost all other tasks associated with Rough and Tumble, is a labor of love by volunteers who have to "make time" to work on it. To start with, we're focusing on gathering and implementing content for this site and not on doing fancy web stuff like animated buttons, animated graphics, sound and video.
We have made the decision to making the photos in the Photo Album section as wide as 600 pixels. This means some of the photos are as large as 75 kb or a little more. While they may take a while to load if you have a relatively slow connection, we hope they're worth it, and as time goes by, we will all have faster and faster access to the site as internet technology advances.
Also, there are more likely to be design changes in the first year, and the menu selections in the left column will likely be altered as we get more or less ambitious. Therefore, the fancy stuff will wait until the bulk of the content is posted and also until we are sure most of our visitors have fast enough internet access and current software on their computers to take advantage of the bells and whistles, without undue waiting.
