Original posting on May 14, 2002 Question #08 I have a very old road grader that was once owned by the township were I live. It was horse drawn, originally, but was converted to a tractor hitch. I would like to restore it to its original colors. The name plate reads "Square Deal #1 Grader and Ditcher - M.F.G. By J. D. Adams Co. Indianapolis Ind." Any info would be greatly appreciated! Send answer to Original posting on January 26, 2005 Question #11 Hello, This relic is sitting in my Father in laws field. He doesn't care for it but it looks cool. He was wondering if it had any value to it, or how old it was. Anybody have a clue? It has a stamp of J. D. Adams & Company. Indianapolis Ind. Adams was a manf. of road machinery. This is a pulled grader (horses or tractor). Adams later made powered graders that used McDeering engines. They are a collectible item. Don't know any values. Check out Beilers Sale end of Feb. near New Holland. They show up there quite a few times. Jere Wissler From: "Giacinta Bradley Koontz" Subject: Color of grader Date: Sat, 12 Feb 2005 14:24:44 -0800 I have seen a JD Adams Co. grader (No. 20) ...IF the scaling paint near the front connection to the wheels and frame are "original" then I'd say they were bright yellow...the wooden pieces are void of color. The rest of course is pure rust. Best I can observe from this machine. Any idea how old this machine is? gbk Arizona Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 08:40:47 -0600 From: jsteptoe Subject: Antique Road Grader Hello, my name is Jean Steptoe. I have a close friend that has a grader exactly like this one. Have you heard from anyone else about the value or not? My understanding is that mules used to pull these graders to grade dirt roads. Please let me know if you have found out the value on it. Apparently, there aren't many like this left. Thanks, Jean Steptoe From: "doug wood" Subject: horse drawn motor grader Date: Tue, 8 Mar 2005 11:25:27 -0600 Good Roads Company of Indiana, sold these for about ten years. Champion was then associated with them and Champion was bought out by Volvo. We currently have what we think is a 1912-1919 model that we are restoring. But, we are having problems finding a good picture of one from that era. A Mr. Flowers patented the early design...1879 but the trail ends there. From: "doug wood" Subject: Date: Tue, 8 Mar 2005 11:30:42 -0600 This is a horse drawn motor grader from the GOOD ROADS company of Fort Wayne Indiana around 1912-1919. We are trying to restore it and would like photos of a complete one along with color and any other information. 515-332-4809 From: WarriorKin Date: Fri, 1 Apr 2005 15:34:29 EST Subject: question 11 Photo of an old grader used for roads. Adams Graders, but now i own a #8 and lo and behold, beneath some things i was cleaning is an original green, that is very similar to "hunter green". this grader was never repainted, so am sure that this color is original...also looked at about 20 others over the first week in april and found bits of that color consistently.
