Blacksmith Days at Rough and Tumble
June 13 - 14, 2008

Admission is FREE!
Blacksmiths Converge in Kinzers
Heating iron and hammering out artwork and horseshoes will take center stage at Rough and Tumble in Kinzers on June 13 and 14

On June 13 and 14, blacksmiths will gather at Rough and Tumble on Route 30 between Paradise and Gap in Kinzers, Lancaster County (directions), for their annual Blacksmith Days--an annual exposition to show the public that this craft is alive and well.
NOTE: THE FOLLOWING IS THE 2007 PROGRAM. THE 2008 PROGRAM WILL BE POSTED AS SOON AS IT IS AVAILABLE.
Ken StrosniderThe main event of the two days is a competition by six blacksmiths who are each forging an item from a predetermined materials list. A sample of each item will be available for inspection while the smith works on his or her project. The public is invited to purchase raffle tickets at $1 each to vote on their favorite blacksmith. The winner will be the blacksmith with the most tickets in his or her raffle ticket can. At the end of the competition on Saturday at 4 p.m. one raffle ticket will be pulled from each can, and that winner can choose between the corresponding item that was made during Blacksmith Days or the sample item. Each blacksmith has three hours to complete his or her project.

Larry LongOn Friday, blacksmith Kelly Smyth of Glen Mills will forge her competition item from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the blacksmith shop on the grounds. In the Brubaker Building, blacksmiths will be available to show how a hook, leaf or nail is made. Food will be available throughout the afternoon, and other buildings/displays will be open on the grounds such as the steam engine building.

Todd GladfelterOn Saturday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., the public will find blacksmiths Dave Fisher of Hamburg; Larry Long of Lititz; Ken Strosnider of Detour, Md.; Todd Gladfelter of New Ringgold; and Jim Keiffer of Honey Brook working on their projects in the Brubaker Building. Outside, 20+ farriers will be competing under a tent in the annual forging contest of the Pennsylvania Professional Farriers Association, making different types of horse shoes. Children can participate in a pedal tractor pull, egg/anvil toss and a watermelon seed spitting contest during the day. Food will be available on the grounds.

Also scheduled to be operating/open on Saturday: steam train (a small fee charged for rides), the sawmill (run by a steam-powered traction engine), model building, stationary steam building and other attractions. Vendors will be on hand selling blacksmith-related tools and equipment.
Admission is FREE for the public, the only Rough and Tumble event that has free admission.
