Photo Album - 2002 Spring Steam-up
May 10-11, 2002
Spring Steam-Up is a special event each year at Rough and Tumble. It's time to get the steam engines out of hibernation and fire them up. It's the only time of the year that you'll see many of them doing real work when they do some plowing.
I attended this year's event on Friday, May 10 and took many photos. Steve Sharp and Charlie Zuck attended on Saturday, May 11 and provided me with some great photos, many of which are included in this photo album. I want to thank them for all of us for contributing their photos. Photo credit is indicated below each photo.

Miscellaneous Scenes - Early in the day, before the grounds get crowded, is a great time to see the equipment up close and talk to exhibitors. Here are a wide variety of scenes of equipment and the people who make R&T a fun place to visit at any time of the day.
Steam Traction Engines - Steam engines, large and small, traction and stationary are celebrated at the Spring Steam-up.
Gas Tractors - Many gas engined tractors and engines are running during Spring Steam-up, and many others are available for viewing in storage sheds as they wait for John Deere Day and especially the Threshermen's Reunion in August.
Plowing Demonstrations - One of the highlights each year at Rough and Tumble is the plowing demonstration, done only at the Spring Steam Up. This is a chance to see these machines doing real work, making real work sounds and generating real work smoke.
The Galloway Home-Built A gentleman in southern New Jersey built a home-built tractor in the late 1920's. The tractor has a hitch for pulling and a built-n saw mill on the front end. It has not been run for many years, but was recently purchased by Allen Samuelsen, who also owns an Aultman Taylor steam traction engine. Allen and his son Eric brought the tractor to the Spring Steam-up and it was a fascinating example of successful American ingenuity. It not only "ran", but it pulled a trailer around the grounds and was one of the few tractors to make a full round trip in the plowing demonstrations. Here is a special section on the Galloway.
Tips on viewing Photo Albums
Since our album for Day 3 of Steam School 2000, we have been using a "load ahead" feature in our photo albums.
If you use the "Next Photo" link at the top right corner of each photo, then it will pay you to continue looking at the current photo until the activity display at the bottom of your browser indicates the browser is done loading images. Then, when you click "Next Photo", it will appear almost immediately, and the browser will start loading the next sequential image. To put it simply, wait for the browser to complete loading images before clicking the "Next Photo" button.
