Photo Album - The Cooper Gas Engine Story
Rough and Tumble's "new" Tandem Double Acting Gas Engine was manufactured by C & G Cooper Company in 1913 for use powering a gas pipeline pump. It's last pumping location was at the Columbia Gas Transmission Co.'s York Station, shown at the right.
This text and photo essay describes how Rough and Tumble came to own the engine, and how many very dedicated volunteers disassembled it in Medina, OH, transported it to Kinzers, built a complex concrete foundation, and ultimately reassembled and restored the engine to operating condition.

Interesting Statistics
- It took almost a decade from the time Roger Kriebel first became aware of the possible availability of this engine until the engine became the property of Rough and Tumble
- Many volunteers devoted their time, often vacation time from their jobs, to bring about Rough and Tumble's possession of this engine. This is a great story of R&T Volunteerism in Action
- Horsepower - 485 hp at 125 rpm
- Two Cylinders
- Bore - 21.5"
- Stroke - 36"
- Double Acting (combustion on both sides of each piston)
- Tandem - both cylinders are in-line on a common piston rod supported by three crossheads
- 4 cycle - providing a power stroke each half turn of the crankshaft
- Flywheel - 14 ft Diameter, each half-section weighs 11,000 lbs
- Crankshaft weight (with counter balance) 11,000lbs
- Estimated total weight - 75 Tons
- Fuel - Natural Gas (R&T will run it on propane.)
- Original Use - Powered a 16" by 36" compressor to pump natural gas through a pipeline
- Foundation at R&T - 135 cubic yards concrete
