Photo Album - 2003 Construction of the
Shay Railroad's New Ash Pit

The Shay using the new ash pitRough and Tumble's Shay Railroad was in need of a new ash pit into which the engine's firebox ashes could be dumped and then easily disposed of. In May of 2003, a volunteer crew of Dave Payeur, Scott Tasso, Dave Supers, Barry Sheinin and others removed sections of the Shay's track along the west end of the rounds, excavated the pit, built forms for the concerete, poured the concrete, created the steel structure necessary to safely catch and dispose of the ashes, and relaid the track. Barry Sheinin took several photos during the construction and they are shown in this short photo album.
You can view the Shay engine ashes being dumped into the completed ash pit in our 2003 Time of Harvest photos album by clicking here.

Tips on viewing Photo Albums
Since our album for Day 3 of Steam School 2000, we have been using a "load ahead" feature in our photo albums.
If you use the "Next Photo" link at the top right corner of each photo, then it will pay you to continue looking at the current photo until the activity display at the bottom of your browser indicates the browser is done loading images. Then, when you click "Next Photo", it will appear almost immediately, and the browser will start loading the next sequential image. To put it simply, wait for the browser to complete loading images before clicking the "Next Photo" button.
