Photo Album - 2007 Steam School
Photos and Report by John Johnson
Our Photo Albums section has photos of R&T's popular Steam School since the 2000 school, for which we have considerable descriptive material as well as over 100 photos.
Since the 2001 school, John Johnson has generously provided photos of each year's school. This year student Frank DeWitt provided several photos as well. John Johnson also generously provided captions for these photos. School photos for all years since 2000 are linked by year from our Photo Albums page.
Click on any link below to see the photo, or Start Here and click the "Next Photo" link on each page to page through all 56 photographs of the 2007 school in order.
You can return to this page from any of the photo pages.

- It's time for students to get up close to already hot steam engines.
- Steam School Administrator John Johnson takes Little Toot for a test run
- Butch explains to students how a governor controls a running engine
- By now, all the theory from class is beginning to make sense
- Two unique engines for students to operate, Dave Capp's scale model engine and Menno Hoover's home built with a vertical boiler.
- Dave Adams explains to students what all the controls are for
- Student Frank DeWitt with camera walks over to ride the scale model
- A full house on the Frick with Instructor Pete Downs
- Another full load chugs around the grounds far right are ready for two new students
- Driving the Frick is Vito S. Schiavone our oldest student from Allentown , Pa who used to operate steam equipment when he was young
- Instructor Megan Glenn enjoys her ride on the Frick engine.
- Where else can you hands-on operate an actual Buffalo Springfield Steam Roller?
- Rob Donley is the Instructor on the roller. Rob took our 2003 school and adopted the roller
- Butch talks steam engines with students Jessica and Jim while an engine passes by
- Instructors Butch Biesecker, Russ Bingaman, Ivan Zimmerman and Menno Hoover pause to watch all the steam engines running around the grounds
- Another student is ready to run Dave Capp's steam engine
- Saturday day 2, the engines are ready to be clean, lubed and fired. These are long tubes.
- Many engines tubes are being cleaned, ever one gets their time to clean the flues
- Even the scale engine needs clean tubes to properly transfer heat to steam
- Instructor Pete Downs in the green shirt supervises his group of students
- Another group of students with Instructor A.J. Hamilton on the far right looking at his crew
- Instructors Dave Adams helps Menno Hoover replace the engine gasket before boiling water
- Notice in the background, it is not easy to clean the tubes in a steam roller. Try it sometime
- What's better that getting under an engine and cleaning the ash pan?
- Getting under two tractors of course, in fact they were all well cleaned and pampered engines
- Instructor Russ Bingaman on left with student Jessica Murphy-Saylor middle on the Altman Taylor
- Student Bob Irons from Lancaster felt at home running the steam roller. Does it get any better?
- Time for afternoon Steam Games
- The goal is to back up and touch the pole without out knocking it over
- Russ is still working on the Altman Taylor but a mechanical problem occurs
- Students Frank DeWitt left and John Beiler drive A.J' Hamilton's 1028 compound Frick
- At the end of the day, there is one group that never gets tired and wants to keep going
- Bad news, the Altman Taylor broke, good news is Butch's Keck Gonnerman is called into action for students, great news for students to operate a very special engine
- Dave Capp watches over a full size engine as students fill the saddle tanks with water
- It doesn't get much better then operating a beautiful detailed engine like Butch's
- Everyone enjoyed the running the small scale engine
- Running Little Toot is a totally different experience firing a small steam boiler at 125 psi
- Instructor Dave Hohenwarter middle with two students, Dave took 2005 steam school
- Steam games with the Kleck, backing between cones
- Remember, steam engines don't have brakes
- I think he is a winner, the pole is standing

- The roller use to be operated by PENN DOT to fix PA roads
