Gas Tractor Games - Games with gas tractors are also a big hit and include tasks such as rolling a barrel through a course, hand-start races, backing wagons, and other challenges for operator and tractor.
Tractor Pull - One of the most popular events is the tractor pull, where antique tractors have to use their power to pull a progressively more resistant sled down a track.
Railroads - A big attraction at almost all Rough and Tumble events is the two steam railroads on the grounds, the narrow gauge Shay and its smaller cousin, the Little Toot.
Threshing - This annual four day event is called the "Threshermen's Reunion" for a reason. Every day of the reunion, there is at least one series of demonstrations of threshing wheat or another grain, starting with entirely hand methods and proceeding through horse-powered threshers and ending with the steam or gas engine powered huge threshing machines, all in action, up close and personal.
- Wednesday's crowd gets ready to see the series of threshing demonstrations
that start with the most primitive hand tool methods and end with
threshing machines powered by antique tractors
- A simulation of cutting grain with a scythe starts the demonstrations
- Bundles of cut grain are tied with grain stalks
- The grain is "beaten" with a hinged wood mallet to detach the grain from the stallk
- With a slight breeze, it is possible to separate the grain from the stalks by
tossing them up in the air, with the grain itself landing a bit "down wind" of the stalks
- A hand-cranked separator is demonstrated with a close-up view by some youngsters
- A one-horse treadmill is used to power ...
- ... this larger separator
- A more powerful two-mule treadmill powers an even larger separator, outputing....
- .... clean grain into a bin
- The Lapp family has been bringing horses to R&T for over 40 years.
Here Elvin Lapp harnesses one of their Belgians to be used for the four-horse sweep.
- Other members of the Lapp family hook up the horses to the four-horse sweep
- The sweep in operation. Through a series of shafts, gears and pulleys, the sweep turns a belt that...
- ... powers this larger threshing machine
- Glenn Stauffer stacks the straw stalks from the thresher into a cart
- The cart is pulled to the stationary Dederick sweep-powered jump press (baler)
where the straw is forked up to the high platform
- The straw is then forked into the press, where two or three young boys
jump up and down on it to compress it into the rectangular compartment
- The sides and top of the press are then closed off
- The Lapp's 4 year old Belgian "Bonnie" then powers the sweep that drives the bottom of the straw "box" up into the box, compressing the straw inside the press.
- With the side door again open, operators push wires through and
tie them around the new bale of straw
- The bale is then pulled from the press and tossed down to the ground,
where it is weighed on a vintage farm scale
- The demonstrations then move to the west end of the grounds where
two or more large tractor-powered threshing machines are demonstrated
- In this instance, a Peerless steam traction engine is powering one of the threshers
- Threshing machines use a complex array of belts and pulleys to
power the many moving parts
- The straw output from the thresher is automatically fed into an attached baler,
that is powered from a pulley on the thresher
- The bales are hand-tied with wire before they exit the baler
- The bales are loaded on a wagon
- The grain comes out the side shute into bags, without spilling a drop
- Carl Plaisted uses his 1937 McCormack Deering Model W-30 to power the thresher also
- It takes two men to keep a thresher adequately fed with grain. (See more on the Maxwell family in the photo's caption.)
- Straw that falls to the ground is tossed back into the baler's input
- This original Meadows Mill Co. machine is being powered by a Rumely
- Grain falls from the hopper down into the slanted metal chute...
- ... and comes out the other end as ground meal...
- ... and then down another chute into a pail
Saw Mill - The steam powered saw mill is another R&T favorite. One or more steam traction engines power the mill while operators take logs from the woods and cut them into boards for use in construction. The scrap pieces and bark are further cut and eventually used as kindling for starting a fire in the fireboxes of the steam traction engines on the grounds.
Parade of Power - One of the most memorable events at the Threshermen's Reunions is the Parade of Power.
