Photo Album - 2004 Spring Steam-up
May 7-8, 2004

Plowing in tandemSpring Steam-Up is a special event each year at Rough and Tumble. It's time to get the steam engines out of hibernation and fire them up. Better yet, it is plowing season, and weather permitting, both steam and gas powered tractors may be seen plowing in the fields adjacent to the R&T grounds.
Unlike last year, the weather this year permitted plowing demonstrations both Friday and Saturday. Along with the gas and steam powered tractor pulls, there were many opportunities to see these engines working under a load.

Phares B. Stauffer, a fixture at Rough and Tumble generally found on one of his many John Deere tractors or working one of the threshing demonstrations, passed away July 12, 2004. Phares is shown here plowing at this years Spring Steam-Up, one of his favorite activities.
Family Activities - One of the great aspects of Rough and Tumble is the amount of multi-generation family activities observed here. Many of our photos, especially parade pictures, show two or three generations of family members on a single tractor, driven by men and women and children. Many of the restorations that are undertaken so that you can see and enjoy like-new antique tractors at Rough and Tumble are completed by fathers and sons and fathers and daughters, and sometimes grandparents and grandchildren. At this year's Spring Steam-Up, George Cavalieri and his 12 year old son William brought their just restored 1946 Ford "2N" to Rough and Tumble for the first time. George said it was great to do the restoration hand in hand with his son. The photos in the "Miscellaneous Scenes" section below include three provided by George of the actual restoration.

Miscellaneous Scenes - A variety of activities takes place at the Spring Steam-up in addition to the scheduled events.

Getting Dirty in the Baker - I found Jonathan Werning inside Rough and Tumble's Baker steam traction engine flaring the tubes in the fire box. There are few steam engine operators who could get themselves through the Baker's fire box door.
Plowing with Gas and Steam Power - Plowing demonstrations are always a popular event at the Spring Steam-up, and this year was no exception. It's another chance to see these tractors doing what they were designed to do on the farm (in addition to belt work powering a thresher).

Pulling with Gas and Steam Power - Always a popular event, but even more so when steam traction engines participate, is the tractor pull.

Tips on viewing Photo Albums
Since our album for Day 3 of Steam School 2000, we have been using a "load ahead" feature in our photo albums.
If you use the "Next Photo" link at the top right corner of each photo, then it will pay you to continue looking at the current photo until the activity display at the bottom of your browser indicates the browser is done loading images. Then, when you click "Next Photo", it will appear almost immediately, and the browser will start loading the next sequential image. To put it simply, wait for the browser to complete loading images before clicking the "Next Photo" button.
