Notes:
A "Hoisting Engine" is usually a combination of engine, boiler, and drum or drums used to hoist or drag materials. The power of the engine is applied in hoisting by means of a cable fastened to the drum. A friction brake is provided so that the drum may be prevented from turning when desired.
It was used primarily in the logging industries. A temporary railroad would be built in to the area to be logged. The hoisting engine would arrive on a flat car. Its cable would be unwound from the drum and tied to a tree in the direction to be worked. Then the hoisting engine would pull itself to that area under its own power. Felled timber would be dragged to the railroad and loaded onto flatcars by series of cables and pulleys using the hoisting engine.
